Chapter 20 - THE DOOR THAT REMAINED OPENTwo years later, the ocean was calm.

Leo stood on the beach, laughing as waves chased his feet.
Clara watched him from the porch.
Julian came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist.
"You know," he whispered, "when I first met you, I thought you were just the nanny."
Clara smiled.
"And now?"
"Now I know you were the woman who saved my son's life."
She leaned against him.
"And you?"
"What?"
"You were the man who thought he had everything."
Julian smiled.
"Turns out I was wrong."
Inside the house, Victoria and Evelyn were preparing dinner.
There was laughter.
There was noise.
There was life.
The mansion was gone.
The empire had changed.
The family had survived.
And for the first time, Clara felt she belonged somewhere.
Then the doorbell rang.
Everyone stopped.
Julian walked to the door.
A stranger stood outside.
An older man.
Gray hair.
Dark coat.
A scar across his cheek.
He looked directly at Clara.
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"Clara."
She froze.
Julian stepped in front of her.
"Who are you?"
The stranger smiled sadly.
"My name is Marcus Vale."
Victoria appeared behind Clara.
Her face went white.
Marcus looked at both sisters.
"I've spent twenty years waiting for this moment."
Julian tightened his grip on Clara's hand.
"Why?"
Marcus looked toward the ocean.
"Because your mother never told you the whole story."
Silence.
Clara stepped forward.
"What don't I know?"
Marcus reached inside his coat.
He pulled out an old photograph.
It showed Clara and Victoria as children.
But there was a third child standing between them.
A little boy.
Clara stared at the photograph.
"Who is he?"
Marcus smiled.
"Your brother."
The wind moved across the ocean.
Somewhere behind them, Leo laughed.
Clara looked at her family.
Then back at the stranger.
The past had finally found her.
But this time, she wasn't alone.
She took Julian's hand.
And stepped forward.
The door remained open.
