Chapter 1 - The Code on His Palm

Hook:
“She does know, Dad. She listens. And I promised.”
Conflict:
I froze on the cold linoleum floor of Room 412. The steady, mechanical hiss of the ventilator filled the heavy hospital silence. For sixty-two days, Sarah had lain motionless beneath the thin white thermal blanket, her hazel eyes closed, her body trapped in an unyielding coma. The neurologists had stopped offering hope three weeks ago. They told me her brainwaves were flatlining into permanent silence. They told me I needed to prepare our seven-year-old son, Toby, for the end.
“Toby, buddy,” I whispered, placing a hand on his small, trembling shoulder. “Mom loves you more than anything. But she’s in a very deep sleep. The doctors say—”
“The doctors are lying,” Toby cut in, his voice cracking with sudden, fierce defiance. He didn't pull away from her bedside. His tiny fingers remained clamped around Sarah’s limp, pale hand. “Or they’re dumb. Because she’s awake in there, Dad. She just can’t open the blinds.”
Discovery:
I knelt beside him, my heart aching with grief. “What do you mean, blinds?”
Toby turned his tear-streaked face toward me. His brown eyes—so much like Sarah’s—burned with an urgency that sent a sudden chill straight down my spine. “She talks with her fingers. She learned it from that spy book we read last summer. Morse code, Dad. Squeezes. Long ones and short ones.”
Twist:
My breath hitched. “Toby… you’re imagining it. Muscle spasms happen all the time with comatose patients. Dr. Vance explained that—”
“She’s not spasming!” Toby hissed, leaning across the mattress. He grabbed my wrist with his free hand and slapped it onto Sarah’s palm. “Feel it. Look at her thumb!”
Emotion:
Sarah’s skin was cool against mine. I waited, expecting nothing. I expected the bitter sting of another false hope, another dagger through my hollow chest. Then, against the meat of my palm, Sarah’s thumb twitched.
Once. A hard, deliberate press.
A pause. Then three rapid taps.
Then three deliberate presses.
S-O-S.
Cliffhanger:

My blood turned to ice water. Before I could even choke out a word, Toby leaned into my ear, his voice barely a breath. “That wasn't all, Dad. Five minutes before you walked in, Dr. Vance was here. She spelled out a name, and then she spelled out *POISON*.”
