Chapter 11 - The Signed Execution

Hook:

“Dr. Vance,” Mark said without looking back. “Terminate the life support. Let’s execute the DNR.”

Conflict:

“No! You son of a bitch, she’s awake!” I roared, kicking violently against the guard pinning my legs. My face was ground into the floor wax. “Look at her monitors! She hears every word you’re saying!”

Discovery:

Vance pulled an official document from his clipboard. “The legal conservatorship was signed into the state registry at midnight. Leo’s proxy was formally revoked due to domestic instability and erratic behavior documented by hospital security. As her legal guardian, Mark Mercer has signed the palliative directive.”

Twist:

Vance reached up and switched the alarm limits on the cardiac monitor to silent. The red flashing lights vanished; the frantic beeping died into a terrible, muted stillness. Then, with clinical calm, he reached for the main power switch on the ventilator.

“The sedative I gave her earlier was succinylcholine mixed with an experimental synthetic compound,” Vance whispered, leaning over Sarah with horrifying detachment. “In four minutes without the vent, anoxia takes over. The compound breaks down into endogenous amino acids upon cardiac arrest. Autopsy will show a sudden, irreversible secondary stroke.”

Emotion:

“Mark, she’s your sister-in-law!” I screamed, tears streaming down my face. “She baked you a birthday cake every year! She took care of our mother when she died! How much money is worth this? How do you look at Toby and do this?!”

Mark didn’t even blink. He looked at Sarah’s terrified, wide-open eyes. “Five million from the key-man policy, Leo. Plus eight million from the Aegis clinical payout once her audit files vanish. Thirteen million dollars buys a whole lot of forgiveness in the Caribbean.”

Cliffhanger:

Vance’s finger flipped the red power toggle. The ventilator hissed one final time... and died.
