Chapter 8 - The Decryption Key

Hook:

“The password isn't numbers, Dad,” Toby murmured from the corner of the booth. “It’s a song.”

Conflict:

Elena’s fingers paused over the keyboard. She glanced at Toby, then back to the screen where a brutal countdown timer flashed: *TWO ATTEMPTS REMAINING BEFORE PERMANENT DATA PURGE.*

“Toby,” Elena said gently, “what song?”

“The one she sang every night when she tucked me in. About the silver stars.”

Discovery:

My mind raced through seven years of bedtime routines, sorting through memories of Sarah sitting on Toby’s bed, her voice warm and melodic against the darkness.

*“Five silver stars over the mountain pine…”*

“*5SilverStarsOverTheMountainPine!*” I blurted out.

Elena typed furiously, hitting enter.

For two agonizing seconds, the drive whirred. Then, the red warning screen dissolved into a cascading directory of encrypted PDFs, spreadsheets, and audio recordings labeled: *AEGIS HEALTHCARE / MERCER DEVELOPMENT AUDIT.*

Twist:

Elena clicked on the top file. It was a transfer receipt dated three months ago: a wire of $1.2 million from Aegis Health’s clinical research fund directly into an offshore shell company registered under the name *Apex Holdings*.

The authorized signatory on Apex Holdings was Mark Mercer.

The authorizing medical officer was Dr. Robert Vance.

Emotion:

My entire reality fractured. My own brother hadn’t just stumbled into an insurance windfall—he had been laundering pharmaceutical research money through our joint firm. And Sarah had caught him red-handed.

Cliffhanger:

Elena clicked an attached audio memo. Sarah’s voice, recorded two days before her collapse, filled our booth:

*“Mark knows I found the Apex accounts. He threatened to ruin Leo if I went to the DOJ. But it’s worse than fraud. They aren't testing drugs on volunteers, Leo. They’re testing an unapproved synthetic paralytic on terminally ill patients at Mercy General—and Robert Vance is their executioner.”*
