Chapter 12 - A Whisper in the Dark

Hook:

The room fell into an unbearable, suffocating silence, broken only by the wet rattle of Sarah’s chest trying to draw air that wouldn't come.

Conflict:

I went feral. Adrenaline tore through the agony in my shoulders. I bucked with my entire torso, throwing the 220-pound guard off balance, and drove my forehead violently into the second guard’s nose. Bone crunched. The guard screamed, dropping his hold.

Discovery:

I scrambled to my feet, my wrists still zip-tied behind me. I threw my entire body weight into Mark, slamming him against the glass telemetry console. We crashed down together in a heap of broken plastic and tangled cords.

Twist:

The door didn't open—it blew inward.

Elena Cruz strode into Room 412, her Glock 19 drawn and locked in a two-handed combat grip. “STATE BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION! HANDS ON YOUR HEADS! ON THE GROUND NOW!”

Behind her were four uniformed county deputies, weapons drawn.

Mark froze on the floor. Vance turned pale as a sheet, his hand still hovering over the dead ventilator.

“Officer, wait!” Vance stammered, raising his hands. “This is a medical procedure authorized by legal power of—”

“Shut your mouth, Vance!” Elena barked, her eyes blazing. “We have an emergency federal injunction signed by Judge Miller twenty minutes ago suspending your medical license and Mark Mercer’s conservatorship!”

Emotion:

“The vent!” I screamed, kicking at Vance. “Turn the damn vent back on! She’s suffocating!”

Cliffhanger:

A deputy tackled Vance against the wall while Elena lunged across the bed and flipped the red switch. The machine wheezed back to life, forcing oxygen into Sarah’s collapsing lungs.

Sarah’s eyes rolled toward me. Through the clear plastic of her oxygen mask, her lips moved. She didn't tap this time. With the absolute last ounce of her vanishing strength, she forced out a ragged, audible sound:
