Chapter 19 - The Poison Purged

Hook:
The sound of the ICU telemetry monitors was no longer silent; it was screaming with full, triumphant vitality.
Conflict:
We burst through the double doors of Room 412 at 5:15 AM.
The room was crawling with federal agents and the hospital’s Chief of Neurology, Dr. Allison Hayes. On the rolling cart beside the bed sat three empty vials of neostigmine.
Discovery:
Dr. Hayes turned to us, stripping off her sterile gloves. Her eyes were red-rimmed with exhaustion, but she was smiling.
“The paralytic has completely cleared her central nervous system,” Dr. Hayes said, her voice trembling slightly. “The ventilator has been downgraded to a low-pressure cannula. Her brain activity is fully normalized. Leo... she’s completely here.”
Twist:
In the corner of the room, Mark Mercer sat handcuffed to a steel chair, flanked by two armed federal marshals. His expensive suit was torn, his hair disheveled, his face gray with the realization that his entire life was over.
On the table in front of him lay the signed confessions from Dr. Vance, the decrypted bank ledgers, and the forensic toxicology report confirming lethal doses of Neurex-4 in Sarah’s blood.
He was facing forty years in federal prison for attempted murder, kidnapping, and multi-million dollar fraud.
Emotion:
Mark looked up at me as I walked in holding Toby’s hand. “Leo... please. He’s my nephew. Talk to them. Tell them it was a corporate misunderstanding. I was trying to save our company—”
I walked over to him. I didn't yell. I didn't raise my fist. I looked at the brother who had shared my childhood, the man who had watched my wife lay paralyzed for two months and planned her execution for money.
“You’re dead to us, Mark,” I said quietly. “Don't you ever say my son’s name again.”
Cliffhanger:
From the bed, a soft, hoarse voice broke the silence of the room.
May you like
“...Leo...”
