Chapter 4 - A Brother's Intervention

Hook:
“Leo, back off. What the hell do you think you’re doing?”
Conflict:
The sharp voice came from behind me. I whipped around. My brother Mark stood in the doorway, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, his raincoat dripping rain onto the pristine linoleum.
“Mark?” I muttered, stunned. “What are you doing here at nine at night?”
Discovery:
Mark stepped inside, exuding the smooth authority he had used to build our regional commercial development firm. He put a heavy, commanding hand on my shoulder, physically steering me away from Dr. Vance.
“Robert called me,” Mark said, his voice dripping with false empathy. “He said you were having an episode. That you were cornering him, scaring Toby.”
“I’m not having an episode!” I snapped, shaking his arm off. “Robert is pushing unlabeled drugs into Sarah’s port. Toby told me—”
“Toby is seven years old and traumatized!” Mark barked, his voice cutting through the room like a whip. Toby jumped, shrinking behind me. Mark took a breath, softening his tone with calculated precision. “Leo, look at yourself. You haven't slept in weeks. You’re seeing conspiracies where there are only doctors trying to save what’s left of your wife’s dignity.”
Twist:
While Mark talked, Dr. Vance moved silently behind him toward the IV line. The syringe was already uncapped in his hand. He was going to push the liquid anyway.
“Stop!” I roared, lunging forward.
Mark grabbed my lapels, slamming me back against the concrete wall. For a split second, the mask of the loving older brother slipped. His eyes were cold, dead, and utterly merciless.
“Listen to me, little brother,” Mark hissed directly into my face, his breath smelling of expensive bourbon and peppermint. “The board of directors is panicking. Our firm is leveraged to the hilt. And Sarah’s key-man insurance policy through our company clears five million dollars the moment her life support is terminated. We can save the firm. We can secure Toby’s entire future. Why are you dragging this agony out?”
Emotion:
My stomach plummeted into an abyss. Key-man insurance? Sarah was just an auditor for healthcare facilities; she had never been an executive at our development firm.
Cliffhanger:
“What key-man policy, Mark?” I asked, terror gripping my throat.

Mark didn't answer. Behind him, Dr. Vance plunged the clear liquid straight into Sarah’s central line.
