Chapter 5 - The Stolen Clue

Hook:
The heart monitor instantly plummeted from 110 to 45.
Conflict:
Sarah’s fist unclenched, her fingers going limp and lifeless against the sheets. The frantic rhythm of her breathing machine took over completely, its rhythmic wheeze mocking my helpless fury.
“What did you just give her?!” I screamed, shoving Mark off me with everything I had. Mark stumbled into a rolling medical cart, sending trays of sterile supplies crashing across the floor.
Discovery:
“I gave her the sedative she needed before you gave her an aneurysm,” Dr. Vance said coldly, tossing the empty plastic syringe into the red biohazard bin. “Now get out, Leo. If you cause another scene in the ICU, hospital security will escort you off the premises, and I will personally revoke your visiting privileges under psychiatric hold.”
“You can’t do that,” I snarled, my fists shaking. “I’m her medical proxy!”
“Not anymore,” Mark said smoothly, straightening his designer tie. “Sarah’s durable power of attorney was updated three months ago during our firm's restructuring. I'm her designated co-conservator for financial and medical decisions if you become emotionally incapacitated. And right now? You’re completely unhinged.”
Twist:
Toby suddenly let out a high-pitched sob, tugging frantically at my coat. “Dad! Home! I want to go home right now!”
I looked down at my son. His face was pale, his lip bleeding where he’d bitten it in terror. But as he pulled my jacket, I felt something hard and angular pressed into my palm—a tiny, cold metallic object he had slipped out of his sneaker while Mark and I were wrestling.
Emotion:
I looked from Mark’s smirking face to Vance’s clinical indifference. If I got arrested tonight, Toby was unprotected. Sarah would be at their absolute mercy. I had to play the long game.
Cliffhanger:

“We’re leaving,” I choked out, grabbing Toby’s backpack. As we walked out the automatic doors into the pouring rain, I opened my fist under the streetlight. It was an encrypted Kingston flash drive with Sarah’s initials engraved on the steel casing.
