Chapter 15 - The Hunt Begins

Hook:
The green dot on my phone was moving fast down Interstate 95 toward the industrial harbor.
Conflict:
“State police are mobilizing a tactical perimeter,” Elena said, her unmarked Crown Victoria screaming at 100 mph through the empty, rain-slicked city streets. The siren was killed; we were running silent. “Leo, you are not going inside that building. That’s a hostage rescue scenario. My SWAT unit handles this.”
“Toby doesn't know SWAT!” I shouted over the engine roar. “He sees guys in tactical armor kicking down doors with rifles, he’ll panic. They’ll use him as a human shield! You know how these mercenaries operate!”
Discovery:
I looked at the AirTag telemetry. The dot had stopped moving. It was stationary at Pier 17—an abandoned cold-storage warehouse my father had purchased thirty years ago, which Mark had quietly retained after the estate settled. I knew every blueprint, every ventilation shaft, and every blind spot in that concrete tomb. I had drawn the renovation plans myself five years ago before the project was scrapped.
Twist:
My phone buzzed in my hand. An unknown number flashed on the screen.
I answered and put it on speaker.
“Daddy?” Toby’s voice was tiny, shaking with terror, but he was alive.
“Toby! Toby, baby, I’m right here!”
“Daddy, they put me in the dark room with the big metal pipes,” he cried. “A man with a scar on his neck has a gun. He says if you don't bring Uncle Mark’s computer, I can’t go to school tomorrow.”
Emotion:
A harsh, guttural voice took over the line.
*“You have twenty minutes, Mercer. Come to the north loading bay alone. No cops. No flashing lights. You bring the flash drive and the signed conservatorship papers. If I see a single cruiser, I dump the kid into the harbor.”*
The line went dead.
Cliffhanger:
Elena looked at me, her knuckles white on the steering wheel. “We don't negotiate with these people, Leo. They’re professional clean-up.”

“I’m not negotiating,” I said, checking the tactical knife and the crowbar I’d pulled from Elena’s trunk kit. “I’m building an ambush.”
