Chapter 14 - THE SAFE HOUSE BY THE SHORE

The rain came down in relentless sheets by the time they reached the old bait-and-tackle shack nestled behind the dunes of Point Sorrow. The structure was weathered gray by salt spray, hidden beneath weeping willows and wild sea oats.

Daniel kicked open the swollen wooden door. The inside smelled of cedar shavings, kerosene, and old rain. He ushered Clara and Noah inside, immediately shoving a rusted iron bar across the door brackets.

"This was my father's hideaway," Daniel panted, wiping rain and sweat from his forehead. "Nobody knows about this place. Not even the firm."

He laid Noah on an old sofa, covering him with a wool blanket. Exhausted from panic and tears, the little boy drifted into a fitful, feverish sleep within minutes, his tiny fingers still locked into Clara’s sweater.

"Daniel, look at me," Clara whispered, stepping into the dim kitchen alcove. "The baby rattle. The Sterling crest. Noah isn’t just an orphan you took in, is he?"

Daniel leaned his head against the damp pine wall, closing his eyes. His broad chest rose and fell in ragged gasps. When he opened his eyes, they were filled with ten years of unspeakable guilt.

"Noah isn't an orphan, Clara," Daniel said, his voice cracking. "Noah is Julian Sterling’s biological son."

Clara stepped back as if struck across the face. "Julian? Victoria’s late husband? The heir to the Sterling pharmaceutical empire who died in that mysterious yacht explosion five years ago?"

"Julian didn't die by accident," Daniel confessed, his hands shaking as he pulled an old iron key on a cord from beneath his shirt. "Julian discovered his wife was laundering cartel money through pediatric clinical trials. When he threatened to go to the FBI with the offshore ledgers, Victoria had his yacht sabotaged. But before he set sail on that death cruise, Julian smuggled his infant son to me. He made me swear on my life to hide the boy until he was old enough to claim the trust."

Clara’s heart stopped. "The Sterling Trust..."

"Two billion dollars," Daniel whispered. "If Noah lives to his seventh birthday—which is three days from now—the trust automatically activates in his name, stripping Victoria of every cent, every property, and every shred of legal immunity. But if Noah dies before midnight on Friday... Victoria inherits the entire empire."
