Chapter 25 - THE POISON IN THE INHERITANCE

The rain on the flight deck was relentless, driven sideways by thirty-knot sea winds.
The black Seahawk helicopter sat on the helipad, its twin turboshaft engines already screaming to life, the massive rotor blades beginning to blur against the stormy gray sky. The pilot, wearing a black flight helmet with a darkened visor, signaled urgently from the cockpit window, waving them aboard.
Clara carried Noah in her arms, running through the torrential downpour. Daniel stumbled behind her, his hand pressed against the wound in his abdomen, leaving a trail of thinned, washed-out blood across the wet non-skid flight deck.
"Get in! Get in!" Daniel shouted over the roar of the engines.
Clara hoisted Noah into the cabin of the helicopter. The boy scrambled onto the troop seats, buckling the heavy five-point harness with trembling hands. Clara turned to help Daniel, grabbing the shoulder of his vest to heave him up into the cabin.
He collapsed onto the floorboards, coughing hoarsely, his face graying.
"We're clear!" Clara screamed at the cockpit bulkhead. "Lift off! Go!"
The helicopter lifted instantly, tilting nose-down as it swept out over the dark, turbulent Atlantic waters, leaving the burning, chaotic silhouette of the USS *Guardian* behind them.
Clara knelt beside Daniel, tearing open a field dressing from the helicopter’s medical kit. "Keep pressure on it. Daniel, look at me! Keep your eyes on me!"
"I'm looking, Clara... I'm looking," Daniel whispered, forcing a faint, bloody smile. His eyes were drifting, fighting off the heavy fog of shock. "You were magnificent back there... at the lighthouse. Julian would have been proud."
"Don't talk like that. You're going to see him. He's going to make it off that ship," Clara insisted, pressing the gauze pad firmly against his torn side. Daniel hissed in agony, his fingers digging into her wrist.
"Clara..." Daniel choked, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "The pilot."
Clara froze. "What?"
"Look at his flight suit..." Daniel muttered, his eyes narrowing toward the cockpit partition. "He's not wearing... Navy insignia. He’s wearing... Vanguard security patches."
A cold spike of adrenaline shot through Clara’s veins.
She slowly turned her head toward the cockpit. Through the small rectangular window in the bulkhead door, she saw the pilot's reflection in the instrument panel.
He wasn't flying them toward a military base. The GPS navigation display in the center console showed a direct flight path heading straight toward the glowing neon skyline of Manhattan—specifically, the private rooftop helipad of the Sterling Global Tower.
The interior ventilation vents in the passenger cabin suddenly hissed.
A sweet, chemical odor—like bitter almonds and burnt sugar—began pouring from the ceiling grates.
"Gas!" Clara shouted, grabbing Noah's jacket and pulling it over his mouth and nose. "Noah, hold your breath! Don't breathe it in!"
"Mommy, it smells funny!" Noah coughed, his eyes instantly watering.
Daniel tried to lunge to his feet, reaching for his sidearm, but the neurotoxin acted with terrifying speed. His limbs turned to lead; his weapon clattered across the cabin floor. He slumped back against the troop seats, his vision rolling back into his head.
"Daniel!" Clara screamed.
She grabbed the emergency fire axe mounted on the helicopter's interior bulkhead. With a feral scream born of pure motherly desperation, she swung the axe directly into the reinforced glass window separating the passenger cabin from the cockpit.
*SMASH.*
The plexiglass shattered. Clara shoved her arm through the jagged hole, grabbing the pilot by his flight helmet and yanking his head backward violently.
"Turn this bird around or I will tear your throat out!" Clara roared.
The pilot struggled against her grip, fighting the cyclic stick with one hand while reaching for a stun gun on his vest with the other. The helicopter banked violently to the left, throwing Noah against his harness, skimming mere feet above the whitecaps of the ocean.

"You're too late, lady!" the pilot choked out, his voice garbled through his oxygen mask. "Victoria is already at the tower! The entire board is waiting for the boy!"
