Chapter 24 - THE SECRET BENEATH THE MARBLE

Clara dragged herself through the cramped, dust-choked ventilation shaft, her fingers digging into the sheet metal joints. Ahead of her, Noah's small sneakers squeaked against the metal as he crawled frantically toward the faint hum of machinery.

Behind them, the gun battle in the medical bay had devolved into absolute chaos. Alarms were blaring across the entire warship—a continuous, wailing siren accompanied by the automated voice: *"SECURITY BREACH DECK THREE. ALL UNASSIGNED PERSONNEL REPORT TO GENERAL QUARTERS."*

"Mommy! I see a light!" Noah's voice drifted back to her, thin and trembling.

"Hold on, sweetheart, wait for me!" Clara gasped, forcing herself forward.

They tumbled out of the exhaust shaft onto an elevated industrial catwalk overlooking the secondary engine bay. Massive diesel turbines roared below, their deafening vibration shaking the steel railings. But it wasn't Navy crewmen who greeted them.

Lying on the metal floor near the access ladder were two Navy sailors, both disarmed and zip-tied, their faces bruised.

Standing over them, checking the chamber of an M4 carbine, was Daniel.

He was pale as paper, his torso wrapped tightly in thick white trauma dressings that were already seeping crimson near his left hip. His hospital scrub pants were torn, and he leaned heavily against a steel support beam just to keep his balance. But the moment his gaze found Clara and Noah, the agonizing pain on his face vanished, replaced by fierce, primal relief.

"Clara!" Daniel choked out, lunging toward the foot of the ladder.

"Daniel! Oh god, Daniel!" Clara scrambled down the metal rungs, sliding the last four feet and throwing her arms around his neck, mindful of the bloody bandages beneath his shirt.

Noah threw his arms around Daniel's knees, burying his face in his uncle's legs. "Uncle Dan! You're awake!"

"I told you I'd come back for you, buddy," Daniel wheezed, groaning through his teeth as he gently ruffled Noah's hair. He looked up at Clara, his eyes dark with urgent desperation. "Where is Julian?"

"He stayed behind in the med bay," Clara said, tears spilling over her lashes. "Victoria is here, Daniel. She survived the fall. She brought an entire assault team onto the ship!"

Daniel’s jaw tightened. "She didn't come by sea. She had a fast-attack vessel shadowing the Marshals from the moment we left the harbor. The Vanguard Trust owns half the maritime shipping lanes on the Eastern seaboard."

"We have to go back for him!" Clara cried.

"We can't," Daniel said, shaking his head grimly. "Julian gave me orders before they brought me to surgery. If the perimeter collapsed, my only mission was to get you and Noah to Manhattan."

"Manhattan? Why Manhattan?"

"Because Victoria’s empire isn't run from a boardroom," Daniel whispered, leaning in, his breath ragged and shallow. "The real records—the physical paper ledgers, the offshore biometric transfer codes that my father hid before his death—they aren't on a server that can be hacked. They’re buried underneath Sterling Manor. In the family vault beneath the marble ballroom floor."

Clara remembered the night of the gala. The towering pyramid of champagne glasses. The cold look in Victoria’s eyes when she pulled the pistol on Clara in the library.

"The vault is wired to Noah's blood," Daniel continued, pulling a set of keys and a master security fob from his tactical vest. "Victoria's mercenaries aren't trying to capture the boy to study him. They're going to use his handprint and a biometric blood scan to crack the master vault and burn every piece of physical evidence before the federal strike team arrives at dawn."

Suddenly, the heavy steel door at the far end of the engine catwalk was kicked open.

A burst of automatic gunfire pinged off the metal deck plate inches from Daniel’s boots.

"Move!" Daniel barked, shoving Clara and Noah toward the emergency escape hatch that led directly to the flight deck stairs. "Up the stairs! Don't look back!"

Daniel spun around, bracing his rifle against the handrail, and returned fire with vicious precision, holding the line as the smell of gunpowder filled the roaring engine room.
