Chapter 28 - THE PENTHOUSE EXECUTION

The top floor of Sterling Global Tower was a cathedral of glass, chrome, and unfathomable wealth.
Seventy-five stories above the bustling streets of Manhattan, the panoramic boardroom offered an uninterrupted 360-degree view of the city lights shimmering through the rain. Around the forty-foot Brazilian walnut conference table sat twelve men and women—the shadowy executive committee of The Vanguard Trust. Billionaires, private defense contractors, and foreign dignitaries.
At the head of the table sat Victoria Sterling.
Her right arm was bound in a clean medical sling beneath an immaculate, thousand-dollar bespoke midnight-blue blazer. Her hair was styled perfectly, covering the stitches along her hairline. Only the cold, psychotic twitch in her left eyelid betrayed the madness simmering beneath the surface.
In the center of the table rested a silver metallic briefcase, connected by glowing fiber-optic cables to a massive wall-mounted display showing billions of dollars in escrow accounts.
Beside the briefcase sat a gold-plated nine-millimeter pistol.
"The asset is en route," Victoria said smoothly, her voice amplified by the room's acoustic ceiling. "Detective Miller failed, but our tactical units have secured Roosevelt Island. The boy will be in this room in less than twenty minutes."
"And what of Daniel and Julian?" asked a thin, aristocratic man at the far end of the table, his Swiss accent sharp. "Julian was seen on the naval vessel, Victoria. If he reaches the federal prosecutor—"
"Julian is at the bottom of the Atlantic," Victoria lied without blinking, her smile razor-thin. "The Navy vessel suffered an unfortunate catastrophic engine explosion. The media is already reporting it as an industrial accident. Once the boy's biometric scan completes the transfer, The Vanguard Trust will absorb Sterling Global completely. We will own the patent on the Chimera protocol. Every government on Earth will buy their defenses from us."
Suddenly, the private express elevator behind the boardroom chimed.
*DING.*
The twelve board members turned in unison.
The heavy mahogany doors slid open.
Two Vanguard mercenaries stepped out backward, their rifles raised, their faces pale with shock.
Walking behind them, holding a detonator in her left hand and a short-barreled tactical shotgun leveled at their spines, was Clara.
Strapped to Clara's chest was a military tactical rig containing six bricks of commercial C4 demolition blocks—the emergency ordnance Daniel had stored in the helicopter’s survival locker.
Beside Clara, holding Noah’s small hand, walked Eleanor Sterling.
The boardroom erupted into dead silence.
The aristocratic Swiss man knocked his crystal tumbler of scotch across the table. Two board members bolted to their feet, their chairs screeching against the polished floor.
Victoria’s smile vanished. Her face drained of all color, turning the shade of spoiled milk.
"Eleanor...?" Victoria gasped, her voice barely a whisper. "You're dead."
"I was merely waiting for you to gather all your co-conspirators in one room, Victoria," Eleanor said, her voice echoing through the vast penthouse with chilling authority. "It saves the Department of Justice the trouble of tracking you down individually."
"Shoot her!" Victoria shrieked at the two private security guards near the glass wall. "Shoot both of them!"
"Take one step," Clara yelled, her thumb pressing down on the spring-loaded safety toggle of the detonator, "and seventy-five floors of this tower will collapse into the subway system below! Try me! I have buried everything I loved in the last forty-eight hours! I have nothing left to lose!"
Victoria grabbed the gold-plated pistol from the table, her hand trembling violently. "You won't do it, Clara! You wouldn't blow up the boy!"
May you like
"Noah isn't dying today, Victoria," Clara said, her voice dropping into a low, deadly register. "You are."
