Chapter 22 - THE MAN WHO DIED TWICE

The sterile hum of the medical bay aboard the USS *Guardian*, a Navy amphibious transport dock stationed twelve miles off the Massachusetts coastline, did little to calm the fire raging in Clara’s chest.

She sat on the edge of an examination cot, wrapped in a coarse military wool blanket. Her hands were still stained with rust, saltwater, and Daniel’s dried blood. Across the room, Noah was sleeping under the heavy influence of a mild pediatric sedative, his breathing finally steady, his pale arm bandaged where Victoria’s men had drawn blood for the biometric tests.

The heavy hydraulic door slid open with a sharp hiss.

Julian Sterling stepped inside.

Up close, without the blinding helicopter spotlight, Clara could see the toll the last five years had taken on him. The billionaire heir wore a simple black tactical sweater and dark trousers. Deep surgical scars traced along his hairline and across his collarbone—remnants of the explosion that was supposed to have killed him. But his eyes were terrifyingly sharp.

"You look just like the photographs Daniel kept in his desk," Julian said quietly, his voice deep and gravelly. "He always said you were the strongest woman he’d ever met. He wasn't wrong."

Clara stood up so fast the blanket dropped from her shoulders. Her hands balled into tight, shaking fists.

"Where is he?" she demanded, her voice raw and jagged. "Where is Daniel?"

Julian lowered his gaze for a fraction of a second. That split-second hesitation felt like an icy blade piercing Clara’s heart.

"He's in surgery on the lower deck," Julian answered. "Two gunshot wounds to the abdomen, massive blunt force trauma from the lighthouse stairwell. The Navy trauma team is doing everything they can, but... he lost a massive amount of blood before the extraction team reached him."

Clara took a step forward, closing the distance between them until she was inches from Julian's chest. "You used us," she hissed, tears burning behind her eyelids. "You used your own brother as bait! You let Daniel believe you were dead for five years! He blamed himself every single day of his life, Julian! He drank himself to sleep because he thought he failed you!"

"I had to die, Clara," Julian whispered, not flinching from her fury. "If I had stayed alive, Victoria wouldn't have just killed me. She would have eliminated every single person who carried the Sterling bloodline. She would have poisoned Noah in his crib."

Clara turned her head toward the sleeping boy. "What does she want from him? What is this 'cipher' Miller was talking about?"

Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted titanium drive.

"My father didn't just build a pharmaceutical empire, Clara. In his final years, suffering from terminal cellular degeneration, he funded an off-the-books genetic research program called Project Chimera. He mapped out a synthetic immunodeficiency cure worth hundreds of billions on the global black market. But he knew Victoria was ambitious, ruthless, and mentally unstable. He knew she would weaponize it."

Julian stepped closer, his gaze softening as he looked at his son.

"Before he died, my father encoded the encryption key directly into the non-coding DNA sequences of his legitimate heir. Not me. Not Victoria. His grandson. Noah."

Clara felt the room spin. "Noah's DNA... is an encryption key?"

"A living ledger," Julian said grimly. "Victoria didn't want Noah because she loved him or wanted to raise him. She needed his bone marrow to unlock a multi-billion-dollar military contract with a foreign syndicate. Daniel found out. That’s why she orchestrated my assassination five years ago. But Daniel smuggled Noah out to you before she could secure him."

Suddenly, the red emergency beacon above the door flashed to life, its silent rotation painting the white walls in crimson.

The bulkhead intercom crackled with frantic urgency:

*"Bridge to all security detachments! Condition Red! Coastal radar has lost contact with the recovery vessel near Devil's Reef. Coast Guard Cutter 402 is reporting multiple hostiles in the water. We have an unauthorized boarding craft approaching the starboard stern!"*

Julian’s face went pale. He drew a custom SIG Sauer from his shoulder holster with lightning speed.

"That’s impossible," Julian muttered. "Nobody has the coordinates to this ship."

Clara’s heart dropped into her stomach. "Victoria didn't drown."

May you like

Julian looked at her, his eyes cold as ice. "Victoria never works alone. Clara, take the boy. Now."
