Chapter 31 - The Leap into the Abyss

The rain struck Clara’s face like shattered glass as the southern corner of the penthouse grooved, groaned, and finally sheared away into the open blackness of the Manhattan night. Seventy-five stories below, the yellow taxicabs looked like dying embers trapped beneath a veil of freezing mist.
"MOMMY!" Noah’s voice was torn away by the howling gale. His tiny fingers slipped along the wet chrome flashing of the floor beam. His legs swung freely out over the endless void, shoes kicking frantically at empty air.
"Noah! Don't let go! Look at me!" Daniel roared over the deafening scream of twisting steel. He threw his bruised, battered body onto the wet concrete slab, sliding on his stomach across the slick floor, completely ignoring the shards of safety glass slicing into his ribs. His arm shot out, veins bulging against his skin, fingers clamping down with white-knuckled desperation around Noah’s small, soaked wrist just as the boy’s grip failed.
Noah dangled over seven hundred feet of empty space. "Daniel!" the boy sobbed, his face pale as chalk under the flashing emergency strobes.
"I’ve got you! I’ve got you, buddy! You’re not falling—not on my watch!" Daniel grunted, his boots slipping on the downward tilt of the cracking floor. The weight of the boy was pulling him toward the precipice.
Behind them, Clara was fighting for her life against a demon with nothing left to lose.
Victoria’s blood-streaked fingernails dug viciously into Clara’s ankle, tearing straight through denim and flesh. Victoria’s couture gown was shredded, her face smeared with soot, rain, and crimson, her eyes reflecting the crimson flash of the detonation clock.
**00:28... 00:27... 00:26...**
"You took everything from me!" Victoria shrieked, spitting blood into the wind. "My family! My empire! You think you walk away to play happy family with a bastard child? You die here!"
With a feral snarl, Victoria pulled Clara closer, reaching into the waistband of her ruined dress to pull out a jagged six-inch shard of architectural plate glass. She raised it high, ready to drive it straight through Clara’s jugular.
Clara didn’t hesitate. In that single, frozen millisecond, every instinct that had kept her alive through the marshlands, the ambushes, and the boardrooms converged into pure, lethal focus. She didn't pull away. Instead, she drove her free boot violently backward, heel first, slamming it directly into Victoria’s fractured collarbone.
A sickening crunch echoed above the storm. Victoria wailed in agony, her grip momentarily loosening.
Clara ripped her trapped ankle free, rolled onto her back, and planted both boots against Victoria’s chest. "Noah isn't yours. He never was," Clara whispered coldly.
With a primal scream, Clara kicked outward with every ounce of strength left in her body.
Victoria went flying backward across the sloped, wet tiles. Her hands clawed desperately at the air, but there was nothing left to grasp. The entire corner section of the floor gave way beneath her. With wide, horrified eyes, Victoria plummeted backwards into the black, rain-swept abyss of New York City, her final scream swallowed entirely by the roaring storm.
"Clara! Move!" Julian’s desperate shout snapped her back.
Julian was braced against the reinforced frame of the exterior service elevator, his muscles straining as he held the manual door open against the raging wind. Eleanor was inside, clutching the emergency override lever with shaking hands.
Daniel was on his feet, holding Noah tightly against his chest, sprinting up the inclined, collapsing floor toward the door.
**00:09... 00:08... 00:07...**
Clara scrambled to her feet, slipping on the slick marble. The floor beneath her feet ruptured with a thunderous crack. A chasm opened, dropping sections of concrete into the lower floors like falling dominoes.
She ran. She didn't look down. She didn't look back.
Daniel threw Noah through the elevator doors into Eleanor’s waiting arms, then spun around, reaching both hands back across the widening gulf. "Clara, jump!"
Clara hit the edge of the collapsing floor and launched herself into the empty air.
For one terrifying second, she felt weightless, the wind snatching the breath from her lungs. Below her, seventy-five floors of absolute destruction waited. Then, Daniel’s hands locked around her wrists like vice grips.
The momentum slammed Clara’s ribs hard against the metal threshold of the lift. Julian dropped the manual lever and grabbed Clara’s collar, hauling her inside with a violent heave just as the remaining floor of the penthouse vanished into the shadows.

A subterranean shockwave ripped upward through the skyscraper. The heavy blast doors of the penthouse blew outward into the sky in a blinding wall of fire. The steel cage of the service lift groaned violently as the exterior cables snapped like overstretched guitar strings, and the elevator plunged into a terrifying, stomach-churning freefall.
