Chapter 32 - Freefall on Cable Six

The sound of snapping steel cables was like gunshot fire inside an enclosed vault.
Inside the exterior industrial elevator, gravity ceased to exist for three horrifying seconds. Noah screamed as he floated off the metal grating, Eleanor instinctively wrapping her entire body around him like a human shield. Clara and Daniel crashed upward against the reinforced wire ceiling before the secondary hydraulic clamps engaged with an ear-splitting, metal-on-metal screech.
Sparks rained down over their heads in a blinding shower of molten orange.
"Brace! Grab the safety rail!" Julian bellowed, his voice raw as he wrapped his arms around the primary structural beam.
The cage jerked violently, decelerating with such brute force that Clara felt her teeth rattle in her skull. The smell of burning rubber, vaporized hydraulic oil, and scorched iron filled the cramped space. The elevator tilted thirty degrees to the starboard side, swinging out over the sheer drop of the building’s north face.
Outside the reinforced wire mesh, the Manhattan skyline was an upside-down smear of blinding neon and rain. Thick black smoke rolled down from the demolished summit of Hawthorne Plaza, choking the night air.
"Is everyone alive?" Daniel coughed, wiping blood from his forehead where a loose bolt had grazed him. He immediately reached out, pulling Clara toward him, checking her neck, her hands, her face. "Clara, talk to me."
"I'm here. I'm okay," Clara gasped, her voice trembling as she immediately reached down to pull Noah into her arms. The six-year-old was sobbing, his face buried deep into her rain-soaked coat, his tiny hands clutching her shirt so hard his knuckles were white. "Noah, baby, look at me. Look at Mommy. We're okay. We're safe."
"She fell... the bad lady fell into the dark," Noah stammered through choking tears.
"She’s gone, sweetheart. It’s over. She can never touch you again," Clara whispered, kissing the crown of his damp head, though the cold dread in her stomach told her this nightmare was far from finished.
Julian was at the emergency control panel, wiping away a smear of black grease. "It’s not over. We’re suspended between the forty-eighth and forty-seventh floors. The primary brake shoe caught, but three of the four guide cables have sheared. If that remaining cable snaps, the counterweight will drop like a missile and drag us straight to the basement."
Eleanor leaned heavily against the steel wall, her face pale, her hands pressed tightly over her ribs. "How long do we have, Julian?"
Julian peered through the grating down the shaft. Two hundred feet below, emergency floodlights were flashing, and the wail of dozens of fire engines and police cruisers echoed off the glass towers of Midtown. But closer, just five floors down, a secondary service gangway jutted out toward the adjacent parking garage.
"Ten minutes before thermal expansion snaps the last cable," Julian said grimly. "We have to pop the floor trap and rappel down to the mechanical walkway on forty-two."
"Rappel with a child?" Eleanor’s voice shook. "Julian, that’s suicide!"
"Sitting here waiting to plummet forty-seven stories is suicide!" Julian snapped back, already uncoiling the high-tensile steel recovery line bolted to the elevator’s hoist winch. He looped it through a heavy-duty carabiner and tied a secure harness rig. "Daniel, you take Noah first. Tie him to your chest. Once you hit the gangway, Clara drops next."
"No," Daniel said firmly, his eyes meeting Clara’s. "Clara takes Noah. If this cage drops while she’s still up here, I won’t survive it anyway. Get them down first."
Clara looked at Daniel, seeing the blood on his temple, the fierce determination in his dark eyes. There was no room for debate. Not tonight.
Julian strapped the heavy harness securely around Clara, then bound Noah tightly against her chest with the tactical webbing from Daniel’s vest. "Clara, keep your feet flat against the concrete mullions. Don't look down. Look only at the gangway railing. When you touch down, unclip immediately and pull the release pin so Daniel can pull the cable back up."
Clara nodded, her breathing shallow and fast. She cupped Daniel’s bruised face with her hand. "You come down right behind me. Promise me, Daniel."
"Nothing on this earth is keeping me from you two," Daniel said, kissing her lips with fierce, bruising urgency. "Go."
Julian kicked the emergency floor hatch open. A blast of wind and rain tore up through the opening. Clara stepped out into the abyss, holding Noah with one arm and gripping the braided steel line with the other.

As she dropped into the darkness, suspended by a thread between heaven and hell, the sound of structural groaning tore through the elevator above. The last steel cable began to fray, one strand at a time.
