Chapter 23 - BLOODLINE ON TRIAL

The sound of automatic gunfire erupted from the lower decks—muffled, rhythmic, and deadly.

*THUMP-THUMP-THUMP.*

Heavy breaching charges reverberated through the steel hull of the warship, knocking medical trays off the carts. Metal instruments clattered across the linoleum floor.

Noah snapped awake, his eyes wide with sheer terror. "Mommy? Is the thunder back?"

"No, sweetheart," Clara whispered, scooping him into her arms and pulling the blanket tightly around his small body. "Stay quiet, okay? Just like we practiced at the cottage. Not a single sound."

Julian shoved a heavy tactical vest into Clara's chest. "Put this on. Keep your head down."

He moved to the door, tapping the keypad to lock the electronic deadbolt. "The US Marshals who escorted me were compromised. Miller wasn't the only one on Victoria’s payroll. Her syndicate, The Vanguard Trust, has spent twenty years embedding sleepers inside federal agencies. They aren't here to rescue her. They're here to harvest Noah before the federal grand jury convenes tomorrow morning."

The lights in the medical bay suddenly flickered and died, plunging them into pitch darkness.

A heartbeat later, the backup emergency floodlights bathed the room in an ominous, blood-red glow.

*SCREEECH.*

The electronic keypad on the door sparked violently. The smell of burning ozone filled the room. Someone on the outside was using a thermal cutting torch on the hydraulic hinges. A glowing orange line began tracing its way down the heavy steel door.

"Through the ventilation shaft," Julian commanded, pointing toward a maintenance grate near the ceiling. "It leads to the secondary engine room. From there, you can reach the flight deck. There's an MH-60 Seahawk fueled and prepped for MEDEVAC."

"What about Daniel?" Clara asked, her voice cracking. "I'm not leaving without Daniel!"

"I will get Daniel," Julian said firmly, his eyes locking onto hers with unwavering intensity. "I owe him my life ten times over. I won't let him die in an operating room while I run. But you have to save my son, Clara. You’re his mother. You’ve been more of a mother to him than Victoria ever could have dreamed of being."

The heavy steel door buckled with an explosive bang. A blast of compressed air and smoke blew the upper hinge off.

Julian raised his weapon and fired three controlled shots through the widening gap. A choked scream echoed from the hallway, followed by the heavy thud of a body hitting the deck.

"Go! Now!" Julian roared.

Clara hoisted Noah onto the examination table, standing on her tiptoes to shove the ventilation grate open. The metal latches gave way with a sharp screech. She pushed Noah inside first. "Crawl, baby. Keep going forward and don't stop until I tell you."

Noah scrambled into the dark, narrow aluminum duct like a frightened rabbit. Clara pulled herself up, her muscles screaming with agony, every bruise from the lighthouse ordeal flaring in white-hot pain.

Just as her boots cleared the opening, the medical bay door was kicked completely off its frame.

Three private military contractors in unmarked black tactical gear poured into the room, their suppressed submachine guns sweeping the corners. Behind them, stepping through the billowing smoke, was a figure that made Clara's blood run cold.

It was Victoria Sterling.

Her right arm was immobilized in a crude sling soaked through with dark blood. Half of her face was bruised purple, her designer blouse shredded and dripping with saltwater. But her eyes burned with an unnatural, amphetamine-fueled fury.

"Julian," Victoria purred, raising a silver Beretta with her uninjured left hand. "Did you really think forty feet of water could kill me? I survived you for ten years. You think a little ocean was going to stop me from collecting my dividends?"

Julian stood his ground in the center of the room, his gun aimed directly between her eyes. "You're insane, Victoria. It's finished. The grand jury already has your offshore accounts."

"The grand jury only cares about what they can prove," Victoria snarled. "And dead men don't testify."

*BANG.*

Clara pulled the vent cover shut just as muzzle flashes lit up the medical bay below in violent, blinding strobes.
