Chapter 30 - THE COUNTDOWN AT THE VAULT

The vibration grew stronger, rattling the crystal chandeliers suspended from the ceiling.

Eleanor Sterling’s face suddenly went rigid with sheer horror. "The failsafe... it wasn't just a data override."

Julian lowered his weapon, rushing toward the conference table. "Mother, what are you talking about?"

"Arthur..." Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling with an old, forgotten dread. "Your father never intended for this building to survive if the Chimera project was compromised. He built a structural demolition charge into the foundation columns below the sixty-fifth floor!"

On the shattered conference table, the master briefcase—its casing cracked open from the fight—began beeping in rapid, rhythmic succession.

A digital timer on the inner circuit board lit up in bright, radioactive amber:

**04:59... 04:58... 04:57...**

"Four minutes," Daniel wheezed, stumbling forward, clutching his bleeding side. "We have four minutes to clear seventy-five floors."

"The elevators are locked by the security grid!" Julian shouted, pulling out his tactical radio. "Bravo Team! We need immediate rooftop extraction! Bring the birds in now!"

*"Negative, Command!"* the radio crackled with deafening static. *"The storm has turned into a localized squall line! Fifty-knot crosswinds at the roof! The helipads are inaccessible! You have to take the exterior service lift!"*

"The service lift only holds three people," Daniel said, his breath hitching as he looked at Clara, then at Noah, then at his mother.

Behind them, a low, guttural laugh rose from the floor.

Victoria Sterling was dragging herself up against the shattered conference table. Blood poured from her broken nose, staining the front of her designer blazer. Her hair hung in wild, demonic clumps around her bruised face. She looked at the amber countdown timer, and her lips curled into a terrifying, triumphant grin.

"You didn't win, Clara," Victoria whispered, coughing up dark blood onto the floor. "None of you won. We all die in this sky."

Clara ignored her. She scooped Noah into her arms, pressing his face into her neck. "Julian, take your mother! Daniel, move!"

"I'm not leaving you, Clara!" Daniel yelled, grabbing her arm. "We go together!"

"Daniel, look at you!" Clara shouted, tears finally breaking free, streaming down her soot-stained cheeks. "You can barely stand! If you stay to help me carry Noah, none of us make it to the lift in time!"

*CRACK.*

A deafening groan echoed from beneath the floor. A structural steel beam twenty floors below sheared in half with a sound like a thunderclap. The entire penthouse tilted two degrees to the left. The massive conference table began sliding across the hardwood floor, smashing through the lower half of the glass wall, tumbling out into the empty, rain-swept Manhattan night seventy-five stories below.

Wind rushed into the room with the force of an oncoming train, blowing papers, files, and chairs out into the void.

**02:15... 02:14... 02:13...**

Julian grabbed Eleanor with one arm and pulled Daniel with the other toward the reinforced steel access door leading to the exterior service lift. "Clara, jump! We can overload the cable! Just get Noah inside!"

Clara sprinted across the sloping, tilting floor, clutching Noah to her chest.

She was three feet from the doorway. Daniel’s bloody hand was reaching out to catch her.

Suddenly, a pair of bloody, manicured hands shot out from beneath the wreckage of the fallen display console, clamping around Clara’s ankle like an iron bear trap.

Victoria.

"If I burn..." Victoria screamed into the howling hurricane wind, her eyes bulging with pure, unadulterated madness, "...you burn with me!"

Victoria jerked Clara's foot backward with the last of her dying strength.

Clara lost her footing on the slick floor. Noah flew from her arms, sliding across the wet tiles toward the edge of the yawning, shattered abyss where the glass wall had been torn away.

"NOAH!" Clara screamed, her fingernails tearing against the wood as Victoria dragged her backward.

"MOMMY!" Noah shrieked, his small hands clawing desperately at the smooth metal frame of the floor. His legs swung out over the empty air, suspended above seventy-five stories of darkness.

Daniel lunged forward, throwing his entire body toward the ledge, his fingertips grazing Noah's jacket.

**00:45... 00:44... 00:43...**

Beneath them, the first series of subterranean charges detonated with a bone-crushing roar. The floor cracked wide open beneath Clara and Victoria, the concrete splitting in two, and the entire southern wing of the penthouse began to shear away into the stormy Manhattan sky—
