Chapter 13 - The VerdictThe verdict came on a gray Chicago morning.

Guilty.
Multiple financial crimes.
Forgery.
Fraud.
Coercive conduct.
The domestic assault case was resolved separately.
Ryan sat motionless.
I expected to feel victorious.
Instead, I felt empty.
Justice was not a celebration.
It was a door opening after a very long time in darkness.
Ryan was taken into custody.
His attorney announced an appeal.
The family court granted me sole decision-making authority and primary custody of Lily.
No direct contact.
No unsupervised visitation.
Future contact would depend entirely on Lily's safety and professional recommendations.
That night, Lily asked:
“Is Daddy a bad person?”
I thought carefully.
“Daddy made dangerous choices.”
“Can he change?”
“I don't know.”
She looked down.
“Do I have to forgive him?”
“No.”
“What if I still love him?”
I pulled her close.
“You're allowed to love someone and still know they aren't safe.”
May you like
She nodded.
That lesson would take years to fully understand.
