Chapter 17 - Lily's ChoiceRyan eventually became eligible to request a review of his contact restrictions.

The court did not automatically give him access.
Instead, professionals assessed whether limited therapeutic communication might be safe.
Lily was now older.
She had a voice in the process.
One day she asked:
“Do I have to see Daddy?”
“No.”
“Ever?”
“No.”
“What if someday I want to?”
“Then we talk to Dr. Mason.”
She nodded.
Months later, she agreed to read a letter from Ryan.
It contained no demands.
No guilt.
No request for forgiveness.
Only:
I understand I used fear, money, and Lily's feelings to control you. I understand saying I loved my family did not make my actions safe. I will accept whatever level of contact Lily's clinicians believe is healthy.
Lily cried.
Then she wrote back:
I'm still scared when I remember our old house. I don't want visits. Maybe I can write sometimes.
Ryan answered:
I understand.
For the first time, he didn't fight.
That mattered.
