Chapter 5 - The RabbitDuring Ryan's first supervised visit, Lily barely spoke.
He gave her a stuffed rabbit.
Twenty minutes later, the supervisor ended the visit.
Ryan had tried to discuss the custody case.
In the parking lot, Lily handed me the rabbit.
Something felt wrong.
There was a zipper underneath.
Inside was a folded note.
Six words:
TELL THEM GRANDPA MAKES YOU SCARED.
Nora stared at it.
“He put this inside a child's toy?”
I nodded.
The visitation report was filed.
Ryan denied everything.
Then another witness came forward.
Dr. Bennett, my former therapist, confirmed that Ryan had fabricated medical records.
He had contacted her office months earlier.
He had asked whether anxiety could affect memory.
He had been building a psychological case against me.
Then investigators discovered something beneath Ryan's desk.
A recorder.
Another was hidden beneath the kitchen counter.
Another in the living room.
Ryan had been recording our family.
He wasn't merely documenting arguments.
He was creating them.
Provoking me.
Waiting until I broke down.
Then recording my reaction.
May you like
He wanted evidence.
And he had been manufacturing it.
