Chapter 2 - The Money He Thought I Would Never FindRyan went pale.

My father didn't rush toward him.
He didn't threaten him.
He simply walked to me.
“Emily, can you stand?”
I nodded.
As he helped me up, he placed a thick envelope on the kitchen table.
“Three months ago, my accounting department discovered money leaving an investment trust your mother established for you.”
Ryan's expression hardened.
“How much?”
“Six hundred and forty-two thousand dollars.”
I stared at him.
I had barely touched that trust.
Ryan had always handled our investments.
He used to tell me financial matters were “too complicated” for me.
Now I understood why.
Dad opened the envelope.
“These transfers went through three consulting companies.”
Ryan stepped forward.
“Emily authorized them.”
“No,” I whispered.
“You signed the paperwork.”
“I didn't.”
My father placed another document on the table.
“These signatures were forged.”
Ryan laughed.
“Prove it.”
“We already did.”
Silence.
One company receiving the money was Lakeview Strategic Partners.
It had no real office.
No employees.
No legitimate clients.
And it was connected to my cousin Andrew.
My stomach turned.
Then my father showed me something even worse.
A legal document bearing my name.
It claimed I had voluntarily declared myself mentally incapable of managing my finances.
I stared at the forged signature.
Ryan had not simply been stealing money.
He had been preparing to take control of everything.
My finances.
My reputation.
My daughter.
And perhaps my future.
Then police lights flashed across the windows.
An officer asked me the question I had avoided for years.
“Do you feel safe staying here with your husband?”
Ryan stared at me.
That look had controlled me for years.
Say nothing.
Protect the family.
Make this disappear.
Then Lily slipped her hand into mine.
I looked at her.
May you like
“No,” I said.
The word changed my life.
