Chapter 4 - The CourtroomThe next morning, attorney Nora Patel sat across from me.

“I need everything,” she said.
So I told her.
The passwords.
The monitoring.
The broken doors.
The apologies.
The flowers.
The promises.
The cycles.
Nora listened without judgment.
Then she said:
“Emily, what happened to you wasn't one bad night. It was a pattern.”
We went to court.
Ryan appeared in a navy suit.
Perfect hair.
Calm expression.
He looked nothing like the man who had attacked me.
His attorney accused my father of manipulating me.
Then they produced supposed therapy records.
Nora stood.
“These documents have not been authenticated.”
The judge rejected them.
Then Nora revealed something devastating.
Ryan's custody petition had been prepared three days before the assault.
Before I knew he was planning to leave me.
Before Lily called Grandpa.
Before the police arrived.
The judge stared at Ryan.
“You prepared these documents before the incident?”
His attorney tried to explain.
Ryan remained silent.
Temporary custody was granted to me.
Ryan was ordered to have supervised visitation.
As we walked out, Ryan looked directly at Lily.
He smiled.
Then whispered:
“Remember what you promised Daddy.”
May you like
Lily froze.
And I knew the war wasn't over.
