Chapter 3 - The Secret Lily Was Forced to CarryWe spent that night at my father's house.

A doctor examined my injuries.
Bruises.
A split lip.
Pain in my shoulder.
Nothing broken.
But something inside me had cracked permanently.
After Lily fell asleep, Dad showed me more documents.
Ryan had been preparing a custody petition for months.
He had described me as unstable.
Forgetful.
Emotionally fragile.
He had requested old therapy records.
He had collected documents that made ordinary moments of grief look like evidence of mental illness.
Then Diane, Ryan's mother, called.
“You need to tell the police you overreacted.”
I stared at the phone.
“He hit me.”
“Marriage gets ugly sometimes.”
“Not like this.”
Her voice hardened.
“If this becomes a custody fight, people will ask questions about you.”
After the call ended, an unknown number sent me a message.
YOUR HUSBAND HAS BEEN PLANNING THIS LONGER THAN YOU THINK.
Then another:
ASK LILY WHAT RYAN MADE HER PRACTICE SAYING.
I found Lily asleep.
When she woke, I asked carefully.
“Did Daddy ever ask you to practice saying anything about me?”
Her face changed.
That was enough.
Finally she whispered:
“He made me practice telling a judge that you cry all the time.”
My blood ran cold.
“And what else?”
She pulled the blanket around herself.
“That Grandpa scares me.”
Then she began crying.
“Daddy said it was our secret.”
I hugged her.
“You never have to keep a secret that makes you afraid.”
May you like
For the first time, I realized Ryan hadn't only been controlling me.
He had been teaching our daughter how to protect him.
