Chapter 14 - My StatementAt sentencing, I walked to the microphone.

Ryan looked at me.
For a moment, I remembered the man I had married.
The man who once danced with me in our kitchen.
The man who held Lily when she was born.
The man who knew how I took my coffee.
Then I remembered the other man.
The one who turned love into leverage.
“I don't want consequences because I hate Ryan,” I said.
“I don't hate him.”
His head lifted.
“I want consequences because love without accountability became dangerous in our family.”
I looked toward the judge.
“My daughter should grow up knowing that fear is not love. Control is not protection. And telling the truth does not destroy a family.”
My voice shook.
“Sometimes telling the truth is how you save what is still worth saving.”
Ryan was sentenced.
The financial penalties were substantial.
Restitution was ordered.
The no-contact protections remained.
He would be in prison for years.
Outside the courthouse, reporters waited.
I said only one thing.
“Someone can hurt you and still tell everyone they love you.”
Then I walked away.

I didn't want fame.
I wanted my life back.
