Chapter 16 - The First Sign of PeaceI returned to work.

Not for Dad.

For myself.

I joined a housing program helping families who suddenly found themselves without safe places to live.

I learned something important.

People didn't always need someone to rescue them.

Sometimes they needed options.

A safe room.

A bank account.

A lawyer.

A phone.

A few nights somewhere secure.

And the freedom to decide what came next.

That work changed me.

Then I met Ben Carter.

He was an architect helping redesign one of our housing projects.

He was funny.

Patient.

And completely uninterested in controlling me.

One afternoon he asked:

“Would you like dinner?”

I froze.

He immediately smiled.

“No pressure.”

Those two words stayed with me.

For the first time in years, I was interested in someone without feeling trapped.

Our relationship moved slowly.

No jealousy.

No interrogations.

No punishment.

When we disagreed, we talked.

When one of us needed space, the other gave it.

It felt almost strange.

Peace was unfamiliar.

May you like

But unfamiliar didn't mean dangerous.

Sometimes unfamiliar meant new.
