She didn't return to the marriage either.
Not immediately.
Instead, she started a small foundation for women facing financial abuse and public humiliation.
For the first time, she built something that belonged entirely to her.
Alexander watched from a distance.
He never pressured her.
Never sent flowers.
Never appeared unexpectedly.
He simply kept his promise.
He gave her space.
Months passed.
Then one snowy December morning, Evelyn found an envelope outside her office.
Inside was her wedding ring.
Alexander had placed a note beside it.
"I don't want you to wear this because you're my wife. I want you to wear it only if, someday, you choose me again."
Evelyn stared at the ring for a long time.
Then she smiled.
