Chapter 2 - The AccusationAlexander placed a folder on the marble table.

"These are financial records from the company."
Evelyn looked at them.
"What am I supposed to see?"
"Three million dollars was transferred from a private company account."
Her eyes widened.
"I didn't take anything."
"I didn't say you did."
"You didn't have to."
Alexander's jaw tightened.
The woman in red stood several feet away.
Her name was Victoria Hale.
She had recently returned to New York after years overseas, and somehow, within weeks, she had become a constant presence in Alexander's life.
Victoria looked at Evelyn with trembling eyes.
"I never wanted this to happen."
Evelyn slowly turned toward her.
"You never wanted what to happen?"
Victoria's eyes filled with tears.
"Alexander told me you knew."
"Knew what?"
Victoria swallowed.
"That I was carrying his child."
The room seemed to stop breathing.
Evelyn stared at Alexander.
He said nothing.
That silence hurt more than any accusation.
Then Evelyn laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because sometimes the heart doesn't know what else to do when it breaks.
"Congratulations," she whispered.
Alexander looked away.
And in that moment, Evelyn realized something terrifying.

He wasn't asking whether she was innocent.
He had already decided she was guilty.
