Chapter 9 - The Man Who Saved HerEvelyn ducked as glass exploded across the seat.
Someone grabbed her arm.
She screamed.
Then a familiar voice shouted,
"Evelyn!"
Alexander.
He pulled her from the vehicle seconds before another blow struck the windshield.
The attacker fled.
Alexander chased him briefly but lost him in the darkness.
When he returned, Evelyn was trembling.
He removed his coat and wrapped it around her shoulders.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Alexander whispered,
"Are you hurt?"
She looked at him.
"No."
He exhaled.
"I thought I was going to lose you."
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
"You already did."
Alexander looked devastated.
"I know."
That was the first time he had admitted it.
Not defended himself.
Not accused her.

Just admitted it.
And Evelyn realized that perhaps the man she loved was finally beginning to see the truth.
