Inside, Noah found a metal box buried beneath the floorboards.
It contained medical records.
Evelyn Carter.
Patient number 417.
The diagnosis had been falsified.
The real records showed she had survived the fire.
She had suffered smoke inhalation and severe injuries.
But she had been conscious.
She had been able to speak.
She had even tried to contact the police.
Then someone had transferred her to a private facility.
The signature authorizing the transfer belonged to Dr. Mercer.
But beneath it was another signature.
Richard Carter.
Noah stared at his father's name.
His chest tightened.
“He sent Mom away.”
Lily shook her head.
“Maybe he was trying to save her.”
Noah wanted to believe that.
He desperately wanted to.
But the evidence said otherwise.
Then Lily noticed something.
A location code.
