Chapter 4 - The LettersNoah waited until everyone was asleep.

He entered the study.

Moonlight stretched across the wooden floor.

His hands shook as he unlocked the desk.

Inside were financial documents, medical files, old photographs—

and a bundle of letters.

The first one was addressed to him.

His mother's handwriting.

Noah stopped breathing.

He unfolded it.

My dearest Noah,

If you are reading this, something has gone terribly wrong.

His hands trembled harder.

The date at the bottom was impossible.

It had been written five months after her funeral.

He opened another.

Then another.

All written after Evelyn supposedly died.

The final letter contained only one sentence.

Your father knows where I am.

A floorboard creaked.

Noah spun around.

Vanessa stood in the doorway.

She was holding the key.

Her face was no longer elegant.

It was furious.

“You shouldn't have opened that.”

Noah backed away.

“Where is my mother?”

May you like

Vanessa slowly closed the door.

And locked it.
