Chapter 9 - The Man Who Stopped Coming HomeNoah found his father's private office.
Inside was an old voice recorder.
He pressed play.
Richard's voice filled the room.
“If you're hearing this, Evelyn was right.”
Noah stared at the device.
“Vanessa isn't working alone.”
The recording continued.
“I made a mistake years ago. I trusted people I shouldn't have trusted.”
Static.
Then:
“Evelyn tried to stop me.”
Noah's breathing became shallow.
“I thought I could protect the children by staying away.”
The recording ended.
Lily looked at her brother.
“So Dad knew?”
Noah nodded.
“He knew something.”
Then another recording began automatically.
Richard's voice sounded terrified.
“Do not trust Vanessa.”
A pause.
“She has her own reason for keeping Evelyn alive.”
The recording suddenly cut out.
Someone had erased the rest.
Noah stared at the recorder.
