Chapter 14 - The Father's ConfessionRichard looked older than Noah remembered.
His eyes were exhausted.
“I never wanted it to go this far.”
Noah stared at him.
“You left us.”
Richard's face collapsed.
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
“You let us believe Mom was dead.”
“I had no choice.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“You always had a choice.”
Richard lowered the gun.
His voice broke.
“I made a deal.”
“With whom?”
Richard looked at Vanessa.
“With the people behind all of this.”
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
Richard continued.
“They threatened Noah and Lily.”
“So you sacrificed me,” Evelyn whispered.
“I thought I could bring you back.”
“You never did.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“I was afraid.”
Noah felt something inside him break.
His father had not been innocent.
But he wasn't entirely the monster Noah imagined either.
He was a coward who had made terrible choices.
And those choices had nearly destroyed his family.
Then headlights appeared outside.
Multiple vehicles.
Someone had arrived.
