Chapter 1 - THE BOWLThe first thing Daniel Carter noticed when he opened the front door was the silence.

It was a strange kind of silence—the kind that made a house feel abandoned even when someone was inside.
Rain tapped against the windows of the small suburban home, turning the afternoon sky over Ohio into a sheet of gray. Daniel dropped his keys onto the kitchen counter, loosened his tie, and called out.
“Emma?”
No answer.
He frowned.
Usually, his four-year-old daughter came running the moment she heard his voice.
Daddy!
That was her favorite word.
Daniel walked deeper into the house.
Then he heard something.
A soft metallic sound.
Clink.
Clink.
He followed it toward the back hallway.
And stopped.
Emma was sitting on the kitchen floor beside their golden retriever, Cooper.
Her tiny hands were inside the dog's stainless-steel bowl.
Daniel's heart seemed to stop.
“Emma?”
The little girl froze.
Slowly, she looked up.
There was food around her mouth.
Daniel stared at her, unable to understand what he was seeing.
“Sweetheart... what are you doing?”
Emma lowered her eyes.
“I was hungry.”
The words hit him harder than a scream.
Daniel dropped to his knees.
“You were hungry? Where's Mommy?”
Emma didn't answer.
“Emma?”
The little girl looked toward the staircase.
Her voice became barely audible.
“She said Daddy doesn't need to know.”
Daniel felt a chill move through him.
“What doesn't Daddy need to know?”
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
“That we don't have any food anymore.”
Daniel looked around the kitchen.
The refrigerator was nearly empty.
The pantry was bare.

And suddenly, the silence of the house didn't feel strange anymore.
It felt dangerous.
