Chapter 4 - THE MAN IN THE RAINDaniel almost slammed the door.
“What are you talking about?”
Marcus didn't move.
“I know this sounds insane.”
“It sounds criminal.”
“It is.”
That stopped Daniel.
Marcus reached into his coat and pulled out a photograph.
He held it toward Daniel.
It showed Rachel standing beside another man.
Daniel recognized the location immediately.
A warehouse near the river.
“What is this?”
“Your wife was investigating something.”
“What?”
“Money.”
Daniel stared at him.
Marcus continued.
“Large amounts of money were being moved through a charity organization. Rachel discovered where it was going.”
“And you know this how?”
“Because I was helping her.”
Daniel's anger exploded.
“You were helping my wife?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't she tell me?”
“Because she believed you were being watched.”
Daniel felt his throat tighten.
“By whom?”
Marcus looked toward the street.
“People who don't care who gets hurt.”
Then Emma appeared behind Daniel.
Marcus saw her.
His face changed.
“You're Emma.”
The little girl hid behind her father's leg.
Marcus lowered himself.
“I knew your mother.”
Emma whispered, “Mommy said not to trust strangers.”
Marcus nodded.
“Your mother was right.”
Daniel looked at him suspiciously.
“Then why should I trust you?”
Marcus looked him directly in the eyes.
“Because Rachel asked me to find you if she disappeared.”
Daniel's breathing stopped.
“What did she say?”
Marcus reached into his pocket.
A small envelope.
“Only this.”
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Emma.
