Chapter 18 - THE LETTERThe power returned twenty minutes later.
Police found nothing.
No one had entered the house.
But the photograph remained.
Rachel finally admitted she recognized the handwriting.
“Whose?”
“My father.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Your father died fifteen years ago.”
“I know.”
Rachel opened the old box again.
Beneath the photographs was an envelope.
Inside was a letter.
It revealed that Rachel's father had once investigated the same organization.
He had disappeared years before.
Everyone believed he had abandoned the family.
But he hadn't.
He had been protecting them.
Daniel read the final sentence.
If they ever return, follow the river north.
Rachel looked at him.
“I thought this nightmare was over.”
Daniel took her hand.
“Maybe it changed.”
Emma stood quietly in the doorway.
“Are we going somewhere?”
Rachel smiled.
“No, sweetheart.”
Daniel looked at the letter again.
Something inside him knew that the past wasn't finished.
But this time, they weren't helpless.
They had each other.
