Chapter 19 - HOMEThe next morning, Daniel burned the letter.

Not because he wanted to forget.
Because he refused to let the past control their future.
Rachel watched the ashes rise into the morning air.
“You're sure?”
Daniel nodded.
“We spent too many years running.”
“So what now?”
“Now we live.”
Rachel smiled.
They took Emma to the lake.
She ran along the shore with Cooper.
The sun reflected across the water.
For once, there were no police cars.
No shadows.
No mysterious phone calls.
Only laughter.
Daniel sat beside Rachel.
“I used to think coming home meant walking through the front door.”
Rachel looked at him.
“And now?”
He watched Emma laughing.
“Now I think home is whoever is waiting for you.”
Rachel rested her head against his shoulder.
They stayed there until sunset.
Later that evening, Daniel tucked Emma into bed.
She hugged him.
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Are we safe?”
Daniel paused.
Then smiled.
“We're together.”
Emma nodded.
“That means safe.”
Daniel kissed her forehead.
As he walked downstairs, Rachel was waiting.
She held out her hand.
They stood together in the quiet house.
Their house.
Their life.
Their second chance.
Outside, the wind moved through the trees.

And somewhere far away, a train whistle sounded.
Neither of them noticed the black envelope that had been slipped beneath their front door.
