Chapter 14 - THE CONFESSIONThe investigation lasted weeks.

Richard disappeared.
Several people were arrested.
The charity's stolen money was recovered.
Michael's son received counseling.
And Rachel finally told Daniel everything.
They sat on the porch one evening.
The sun was setting.
“I should have told you,” Rachel whispered.
“Yes.”
“I was afraid.”
“I was afraid too.”
Rachel looked at him.
“I thought if I disappeared, you'd be safer.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You were wrong.”
“I know.”
“You should never have carried this alone.”
Rachel's eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't know who to trust.”
Daniel reached for her hand.
“You could have trusted me.”
She nodded.
“I know that now.”
Inside the house, Emma laughed.
Cooper barked.
For the first time, the sound felt normal.
Then Rachel looked toward the window.
“Daniel.”
“What?”
“There is something I never told you.”
“What?”
She reached into her pocket.
A small key.
“What does this open?”
Rachel looked at him.
“I don't know.”
“Then where did you get it?”
“Richard gave it to me.”
Daniel's smile disappeared.
“Why?”
Rachel whispered:
“He said there was one final account.”
“One account?”
“With money.”
“How much?”

Rachel looked toward the darkening sky.
“Enough to change our lives forever.”
