Chapter 15 - THE ACCOUNTThe key opened a safety deposit box.

Inside was a single document.
No money.
No photographs.
Just a list of names.
Daniel recognized several immediately.
Politicians.
Business leaders.
Lawyers.
Police officers.
Rachel stared at the list.
“This goes higher than Richard.”
Daniel felt cold.
“Then it's not over.”
“No.”
They looked at each other.
For months, they had been running.
Now they realized the truth.
They had survived only one part of the storm.
But they had something their enemies didn't expect.
Evidence.
They gave everything to federal investigators.
The investigation became national news.
People who had seemed untouchable suddenly disappeared from public life.
Rachel testified.
Daniel stood beside her.
And Emma?
Emma went back to preschool.
She drew pictures.
She played with Cooper.
She laughed again.
One afternoon, Daniel found a drawing on the refrigerator.
It showed three people holding hands.
Daddy.
Mommy.
Emma.
Above them was a bright yellow sun.
Daniel smiled.
For the first time, he believed they might actually be okay.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
No voice.
Only breathing.
Then a whisper:
“You found the account.”
The line went dead.
Daniel looked through the window.
Across the street, a black sedan was parked.
May you like
He ran outside.
The car was already gone.
