Chapter 16 - THE LAST SHADOWThe police investigated.

Nothing.
No fingerprints.
No license plate.
No useful footage.
Daniel became paranoid.
Every unfamiliar car made him nervous.
Every knock at the door made Emma hide behind him.
Rachel noticed.
“You can't live like this.”
“I have to protect you.”
“You already did.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I almost lost you.”
Rachel stepped closer.
“You didn't.”
She placed her hand against his chest.
“We're still here.”
That night, they sat together beside Emma's bed.
Their daughter slept peacefully.
Rachel whispered:
“Maybe this is our second chance.”
Daniel smiled.
“Second?”
“Our first marriage was before we knew what mattered.”
“And now?”
“Now we know.”
Daniel kissed her forehead.
Outside, snow began to fall.
Weeks passed.
The threats stopped.
The investigation continued.
Richard was eventually found hiding overseas.
He was arrested.
The network collapsed.
The Carter family moved to a quieter town.
They bought a small house with a white fence.
For the first time, Daniel came home without fear.
One evening, Emma ran into his arms.
“Daddy!”
He lifted her.
“You hungry?”
She laughed.
“No!”
Daniel smiled.
He looked at the kitchen.
There were groceries everywhere.
Fresh fruit.
Bread.
Milk.
A full refrigerator.
A full pantry.
Everything his daughter should have always had.
Then Emma whispered:
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Can we keep Cooper's bowl?”
Daniel laughed.
“Why?”
“Because it reminds me.”
“Of what?”
May you like
Emma smiled.
“That Daddy came home.”
