Chapter 17 - THE LIFE THEY SAVEDYears seemed to pass quietly after that.

Rachel began working with families affected by financial crime.

Daniel changed careers.

He wanted to do something that mattered.

They never became rich.

They didn't need to.

Their happiness was measured differently now.

Sunday breakfasts.

School plays.

Birthday candles.

Cooper sleeping beside the fireplace.

The little things they once ignored became sacred.

One evening, Daniel stood in the backyard watching Emma ride her bicycle.

Rachel came beside him.

“She looks happy.”

Daniel smiled.

“She is.”

Rachel leaned against his shoulder.

“So are you.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I am.”

But happiness had taught them something.

It wasn't the absence of danger.

It was knowing what was worth protecting.

That night, Emma came downstairs carrying a box.

“Mommy?”

Rachel looked up.

“What is it?”

Emma placed it on the table.

Inside was an old photograph.

The three of them.

Taken before everything happened.

Daniel picked it up.

“Where did you find this?”

“In the attic.”

Rachel went pale.

There was something written on the back.

Daniel turned it over.

Four words.

You don't know everything yet.

Rachel stared at the message.

Daniel looked at her.

May you like

Neither spoke.

Then the lights went out.
