Chapter 30 - The House in the WoodsThe house stood deep inside the woods.

Broken windows.
Overgrown vines.
A rusted swing moving in the wind.
David entered first.
Leah followed.
Miller stayed behind them.
Inside, the walls were covered with photographs.
Emily.
Clara.
David.
Their parents.
Dozens of photographs.
Some were decades old.
Others were recent.
One photograph showed Leah during her pregnancy.
Another showed Maya sleeping.
David's stomach turned.
“Someone has been watching us.”
Miller examined the photographs.
“Recently.”
David walked deeper into the house.
Then he found a locked room.
Inside was a small crib.
Old toys.
A children's blanket.
And a photograph of two little girls.
Emily and Clara.
On the back:
ONE WAS LOST. ONE WAS TAKEN.
David looked at Clara's photograph.
Then another note fell from the wall.
The child you are searching for isn't Emily.
David stared.
“What does that mean?”
A sound came from upstairs.
Footsteps.
Everyone froze.
Miller drew his weapon.
“Who's there?”
Silence.
Then a woman's voice came from above.
“David.”
May you like
He knew that voice.
His mother.
