Chapter 31 - She Wasn't AloneDavid looked toward the staircase.

His mother appeared at the top.
She was supposed to be in custody.
“How did you get here?”
She smiled.
“You still don't understand.”
Miller stepped forward.
“Get on your knees.”
But another person appeared behind her.
A man.
Older.
Wearing a dark coat.
David didn't recognize him.
His mother looked at the man.
“He knows everything.”
David stared.
“Who is he?”
The man slowly stepped into the light.
“My name is Thomas.”
David frowned.
“Thomas what?”
The man smiled.
“Your father's brother.”
David froze.
“My uncle?”
Thomas nodded.
“I've been watching your family for thirty years.”
Miller raised his weapon.
“Hands where I can see them.”
Thomas laughed.
“You're too late.”
David looked at his mother.
“You knew he was alive?”
She nodded.
“Of course.”
“Why?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because he helped me.”
“Do what?”
His mother whispered:
“Protect you.”
David shook his head.
“You attacked my wife.”
“I was trying to stop what was coming.”
“What is coming?”
May you like
His mother looked at Maya's photograph.
“The same thing that happened to Emily.”
