Chapter 26 - ClaraThe next morning, Detective Miller found a name buried in an old hospital database.

Clara Elizabeth Carter.

Female.

Born twenty-nine years earlier.

Mother:

Margaret Carter.

David's mother.

David stared at the screen.

“No.”

Miller nodded.

“You had a sister.”

David's hands began shaking.

“Where is she?”

The record ended with one word:

Transferred.

No destination.

No guardian.

No explanation.

David felt sick.

“Why did my mother tell me Emily died?”

Miller looked at him.

“Maybe Emily wasn't the child who disappeared.”

David turned slowly.

“What?”

Miller pointed to the birth dates.

Emily had been born first.

Clara had been born later.

David's mother had lost one daughter.

Then apparently lost another.

But one of them had survived.

And if Clara was alive...

David had a sister he had never known.

That night, his phone received a message from an unknown number.

Stop searching.

A second message followed.

Your mother wasn't the only person protecting the secret.

Then came a photograph.

A woman standing outside a coffee shop.

David stared at the screen.

The woman looked familiar.

He had seen those eyes before.

In the mirror.
