Chapter 27 - The Woman Across the StreetDavid went to the coffee shop the next morning.

The woman was gone.
But someone had left a note on the table.
You were supposed to forget me.
David looked around.
Nobody seemed to be watching.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Who are you?”
A woman's voice whispered:
“David?”
“Yes.”
“I need to see you.”
“Who are you?”
The woman breathed shakily.
“I'm Clara.”
David couldn't speak.
“You're alive?”
“Yes.”
“Where are you?”
“I can't tell you.”
“Why?”
“Because your mother isn't the only one who wants me hidden.”
David's heart raced.
“What happened to Emily?”
Silence.
Then Clara said:
“She died.”
David closed his eyes.
“And you?”
“I survived.”
“Why did Mom hide you?”
Clara's voice broke.
“Because I saw something I wasn't supposed to see.”
“What?”
A long pause.
“Your mother didn't kill Emily.”
David froze.
“Then who did?”
Clara whispered:
May you like
“Your father knew.”
The call ended.
