Chapter 38 - One Last VisitDavid visited his mother one final time.

She looked older.
Tired.
But calm.
She didn't ask him to come closer.
She didn't call him “her boy.”
She simply said:
“Thank you for coming.”
David sat down.
“I heard you're sick.”
She nodded.
“I don't have much time.”
Silence.
Then she reached beneath her pillow.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I should have given you this years ago.”
David took it.
“What is it?”
“Something your father left.”
David opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
His father.
Holding baby David.
And beside him stood a woman David had never seen.
On the back was written:
The woman who saved Clara.
David looked at his mother.
“Who is she?”
His mother stared at the photograph.
Then whispered:
“Your father's first love.”
David's eyes widened.
“She knows where the money is.”
He stared.
“What money?”
His mother smiled sadly.
“The money was never the secret.”
David frowned.
“Then what was?”
His mother looked directly at him.
“Your father knew someone in this family wasn't human.”
David froze.
“What does that mean?”

But his mother closed her eyes.
She refused to say another word.
