He had convinced her that everyone wanted to take David away.

His mother finally understood.
She looked at David.
“I thought I was protecting you.”
David's eyes filled with tears.
“You were protecting your fear.”
She lowered her head.
For the first time, she didn't argue.
She didn't scream.
She didn't demand forgiveness.
She simply whispered:
“I'm sorry.”
David stood silently.
He wasn't ready to forgive her.
Maybe he never would be.
But he no longer needed her apology to move forward.
Clara walked toward him.
“I should have found you sooner.”
David shook his head.
“You're here now.”
She smiled through her tears.
And then Maya reached toward her.
Clara picked her up.
The little girl rested against her shoulder.
