Chapter 23 - What She Left BehindThe police arrested David's mother.

Leah was taken to the hospital.

Maya was examined.

She was unharmed.

David sat beside Leah's hospital bed, staring at the bruises forming across her shoulder.

He couldn't stop replaying the camera footage.

The moment his mother entered.

The bat.

Leah protecting Maya.

The second strike.

Every time he closed his eyes, he saw it again.

Then Detective Miller arrived.

He placed a folder on the table.

“Your mother said something about Emily.”

David looked up.

“What do you know?”

Miller hesitated.

“Your mother has mentioned Emily before.”

David's expression hardened.

“Everyone keeps telling me Emily died.”

Miller opened the folder.

“That's the official story.”

David stared at him.

“What does that mean?”

Miller turned a page.

“There are inconsistencies in the original records.”

David stood.

“What kind of inconsistencies?”

“The hospital records were altered.”

Leah looked at him.

David felt the room become colder.

“Altered by whom?”

Miller didn't answer.

Instead, he asked:

“Do you know where your father kept his personal documents?”

David thought for a moment.

“My mother destroyed most of them.”

Miller nodded.

“Are you sure?”

David remembered something.

An old metal box.

Hidden beneath the floorboards of his childhood home.

He hadn't seen it since he was twelve.

And suddenly, he knew where they had to go.
