Chapter 29 - The Family Nobody MentionedDavid stared at Evelyn.
“My mother has a sister?”
“She did.”
“Where is she?”
“Dead.”
“When?”
“Six years ago.”
David felt another piece of the puzzle fall into place.
His mother had spent years telling him that their family was small.
That there was nobody left.
But there had been another woman.
A woman connected to Emily.
A woman who had disappeared with a baby.
Evelyn gave David an old address.
“There was a house.”
David looked at the paper.
“Is Clara there?”
“No.”
“Then why send me?”
Evelyn's eyes filled with fear.
“Because that's where your father found the truth.”
David folded the paper.
Before leaving, Evelyn grabbed his arm.
“One more thing.”
“What?”
“Don't trust anyone who says they are helping you.”
David frowned.
“Why?”
Evelyn whispered:
“Because the person who gave your mother the baseball bat wasn't your mother.”
David froze.
“What?”
