But he had been drinking heavily that night.
He remembered locking the bedroom door.
He remembered telling Lily it was a game.
Then he remembered hearing water.
And walking away.
He had convinced himself the pipe would be fine.
He had convinced himself he would return.
But he didn't.
Victor had discovered the situation later.
Instead of helping, he had manipulated it.
He reopened the valve.
He removed the camera.
He wanted Daniel frightened and indebted.
Victor had turned Daniel's terrible mistake into a weapon.
Margaret looked at her son.
“You abandoned her.”
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
“No excuses?”
“No.”
Margaret's voice broke.
“Then start becoming someone worthy of her forgiveness.”
Daniel nodded.
